What this tool does
Words are groups of characters separated by whitespace, which matches how most word processors count in English. Characters are counted as visible symbols, so an emoji counts as one character rather than two. Sentences are estimated from full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations such as "e.g." can push the sentence count up. Reading time assumes about 230 words per minute, a typical silent-reading pace for adults. Counting happens in your browser as you type.
Common problems
My count is different from Word
Tools disagree on how to treat hyphens, numbers and symbols. Small differences are normal.
Sentence count looks too high
Abbreviations and decimal points followed by a space can look like sentence ends.
