Words to Minutes

Find out how long a text takes to read or say out loud. Paste the text, or type a word count.

Processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How it works

  1. Paste your text, or type only a number if you already know the word count.
  2. Choose a pace, or type your own words per minute.
  3. Read the estimated time.

Example

Before
1200
After
Words: 1200
Pace: 130 words per minute
Time: 9 min 14 sec

What this tool does

The estimate is the word count divided by a words-per-minute pace, shown as minutes and seconds. If the box contains only a number, it is used as the word count, so you can plan a talk or an article length without pasting anything. The default paces are rough averages: adults tend to read silently at around 200 to 250 words a minute, read aloud more slowly, and talk at a deliberate pace of around 130 when presenting. Individual speeds vary a lot with the subject and the audience. Treat the figure as a planning guide, and add time for pauses, slides and questions.

Common problems

My talk ran longer than the estimate

Pauses, slides, examples and questions add time. Add 10 to 20 percent as a buffer, or enter a slower custom pace.

A typed number was counted as a word

Only a box that contains nothing but digits is read as a word count. Remove other characters from the box.

Questions

What pace should I use for a speech?

Around 130 words per minute is a comfortable presentation pace. Use a slower value for complex material.

How is a word counted?

Any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word.

Can I use my own speed?

Yes. Type a number in the custom pace box and it replaces the preset.
