Paste text and see the exact character count, and how many characters are left against a limit.

Processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How it works

  1. Paste or type your text into the box.
  2. Read the counts as they update.
  3. Pick a limit if you need to know how many characters are left.

Size in UTF-8: 55 bytes
Limit 60: 5 characters left

What this tool does

Characters with spaces counts every symbol you typed, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. The second figure leaves out all whitespace, which is what some forms and style guides mean by characters without spaces. Letters and digits are counted separately, and the size in UTF-8 shows how many bytes the text takes, which matters when a field is limited in bytes rather than characters. An emoji counts as one character here but can use several bytes. The limit options are common figures that platforms change from time to time, so check the platform if the exact value matters.

Common problems

The platform counts a different number

Some services count links, emojis or line breaks differently. Use this as a guide and keep a small safety margin.

Why is the byte size bigger than the character count?

Accented letters and emojis take two to four bytes each in UTF-8, while plain English letters take one.

Questions

Are spaces counted?

In the first figure, yes. The second figure ignores all spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Does it count emojis as one character?

Yes. Characters are counted by symbols, not bytes.

Is my text saved anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
