What this tool does
In plain mode your search text is matched exactly, with no special characters, so a full stop or bracket means itself. In regular-expression mode the pattern follows JavaScript syntax and the replacement can use groups such as $1, so (\w+)@(\w+) with $2 at $1 reorders matches. An invalid pattern leaves your text unchanged instead of showing an error. Replacement happens everywhere in the text, not just the first match. Leave "Replace with" empty to delete every match.
Common problems
Nothing changed
Check "Match case" and the spelling. In regular-expression mode, an invalid pattern leaves the text unchanged.
I want to replace a line break
Switch on regular expressions and search for \n. Use \r?\n if your text may use Windows line endings; line endings are already normalised here.
Questions
Which regex flavour is it?
JavaScript. Most basic patterns are the same as in other languages, but features differ.
Are special characters like $ treated literally in plain mode?
Yes. In plain mode both the search and the replacement are literal.
Can I run several replacements in a row?
Copy the result back into the input and change the find and replace fields, then repeat.
