How it works

- The plain version appears at once.
- Copy it.
Example
Crème brûlée à Zürich, Straße, Łódź, Søren, Ñandú
Creme brulee a Zurich, Strasse, Lodz, Soren, Nandu
What this tool does
Most accented letters can be split into a base letter plus a combining mark, and this tool drops the mark. A few letters do not decompose that way, so they are mapped by hand: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, ø becomes o, œ becomes oe, ł becomes l and đ becomes d. The conversion only changes letters; punctuation and numbers are untouched. It is useful for file names, URLs, usernames and old systems that reject non-ASCII input. Be aware that removing accents can change meaning in some languages.
Common problems
Some letters were left alone
Letters from non-Latin scripts such as Greek, Cyrillic or Chinese have no plain equivalent and are kept.
German ü became u, not ue
This tool removes marks rather than applying language-specific spelling. Use find and replace to change ü to ue if you need that rule.
Questions
Is the conversion reversible?
No. Keep the original if you may need the accents back.
Will it help with URL slugs?
Yes. The slug generator uses the same accent removal.
Does it handle uppercase?
Yes. Capital letters with accents are converted to plain capitals.
