Text Diff Checker

Compare two pieces of text and see exactly what changed between them.

Processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How it works

  1. Paste the original text into the first box and the changed text into the second.
  2. Pick line-by-line or word-by-word comparison, and any ignore options.
  3. Read the result: lines starting with - were removed, + were added.

Example

Original
Meeting at 9am
Bring the signed form
Lunch is provided
Changed
Meeting at 10am
Bring the signed form
Lunch is provided
Parking is limited
Result
Removed: 1, added: 2, unchanged: 2

- Meeting at 9am
+ Meeting at 10am
  Bring the signed form
  Lunch is provided
+ Parking is limited

What this tool does

The checker finds the longest run of content the two texts share and marks everything else as removed or added. In line mode each changed line is shown with a minus or plus sign in front, and unchanged lines are shown with a blank marker so you can see them in context. In word mode the output is one passage with removed words in [-square brackets-] and added words in {+curly brackets+}. Use it to check edits to a contract draft, a README or a block of copy. Ignoring case and extra spaces helps when only formatting differs. Very large texts are refused politely rather than freezing your browser.

Common problems

Everything shows as changed

Line endings or indentation may differ. Turn on "Ignore extra spaces", and make sure you pasted the same kind of text into both boxes.

A moved paragraph shows as removed and added

This kind of comparison does not detect moves. A paragraph in a new place appears once as removed and once as added.

Questions

Which text goes in which box?

Put the older version in the first box and the newer version in the second. Removed means it is in the first only; added means it is in the second only.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

Is there a size limit?

Yes, a practical one. Extremely large pairs of texts are rejected with a message instead of slowing your computer.
