Strip HTML Tags
Paste HTML and get just the readable text. Scripts, styles and tags are removed and entities are decoded.
Processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
How it works
- Paste the HTML source or the part of the page you copied.
- Decide whether paragraphs and <br> tags should become line breaks, and whether entities should be decoded.
- Copy the plain text.
Example
<h2>Order update</h2>
<p>Tom & Jerry's order <b>#1042</b> has shipped.</p>
<style>p{color:red}</style><p>Arrives <a href="/t">Friday</a>.</p>Order update Tom & Jerry's order #1042 has shipped. Arrives Friday.
What this tool does
Tags are removed with a pattern-based pass, so this is meant for cleaning snippets, emails and copied markup, not for sanitising untrusted HTML before you show it on a website. Script and style blocks are deleted along with their contents so you do not end up with stray CSS or code in your text. Entities such as &, and numeric forms like ' are converted to the characters they stand for. If you need to extract links rather than text, use the URL extractor instead.
Common problems
Words run together after stripping
Turn on the option that converts <br> and paragraph tags into line breaks so block elements stay separated.
I still see or &
Turn on entity decoding. Rare named entities that are not in the built-in list stay unchanged.
Questions
Is this safe for sanitising user input?
No. Do not rely on it as a security filter. Use a proper HTML sanitiser on your server.
Does it keep link addresses?
No, only the visible link text is kept. Use the URL extractor to list the addresses.
Does it work with Word-exported HTML?
Mostly, yes. Word adds many style tags and conditional comments, and all tags and comments are removed.
